The weaker F4F Wildcats were forced to fight against the Mitsubishi Zero aircraft, one of the most successful naval fighters of the time. Because the experienced American pilots did not let their nimble opponent lure them into maneuvering combat, the Wildcats effectively held the line in the Pacific until the F6F Hellcat could be fielded.
