Corgi Diecast Model: Grumman Apollo 11 Lunar Module (LM) “Eagle” – NASA, July 20, 1969. 50th Anniversary of the first moon landing
Apollo 11 was the fifth human space flight of Project Apollo and the first manned lunar landing mission. Launched on July 16, 1969, it carried Mission Commander Neil Armstrong, Command Module Pilot Michael Collins, and Lunar Module Pilot Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin, Jr. On July 20, 1969 at 20:47 UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) the Apollo 11 lunar module landed on the Moon with Armstrong and Aldrin stepping on the surface around six hours later while Collins orbited above in the command module. After their mission was completed, the crew blasted off from the Moon in the lunar modules ascent stage. The ascent stage was abandoned in the Moon’s orbit after the crew docked with and reentered the command module. The LM still holds the record for the first and only crewed vehicle to land anywhere other than Earth.

As the Apollo Space Program attempted to place humans on the surface of the moon in the summer of 1969, the world held its breath as NASA transmitted sound and pictures from their incredible mission across the globe. Becoming perhaps the most recognized craft to an entire generation of people, the Lunar Module which landed Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on the moon on 20th July 1969 represented the pinnacle of human engineering prowess, but could it bring the astronauts home safely? As the Columbia command module splashed down in the Pacific Ocean four days later, the world had its answer and three new heroes to honor.
